MORECAMBE’S FA Cup match-winner Jordan Slew could have suffered a “horrendous injury” in the incident that saw Neill Byrne sent off.

The City defender was shown a straight red after shoving Slew into an advertising board when the pair tussled on the touchline.

Shrimps assistant boss Danny Grainger was delighted with their 1-0 victory – only their second at home this season.

Graham Alexander thought it was "never a red card" for Byrne but Grainger felt referee Seb Stockbridge made the correct call.

He said: “It’s one of those. It’s endangering Slew because he’s pushed him towards the advertising boards and it could have been a horrendous injury.

“Without going too much into it, for me it was the right decision. We’ve benefited from it and we’ve ended up coming away with the victory.”

Slew got back up and ran towards Byrne as players from both sides converged in a melee.

But Morecambe sub Marcus Dackers headed off the winger to keep him away before Byrne was given his marching orders.

Grainger added: “They are the moments you need your teammates when you lose your head and a little bit of composure.

“You need your teammates to bail you out. Credit to Dackers, he was there to stop Slew doing something he might have later regretted."

Grainger praised former Bantam Yann Songo'o and the Morecambe defence for nullifying Andy Cook for the second time this season.

“A clean sheet at home, a win in front of our fans, who were magnificent, we’re all over the moon.

“There wasn’t a lot of game, it was swinging from side to side. Both teams had half-chances to score but I thought we were on top second half and a lot better.

“Everyone tries to play it down but you want to be in the third round of the FA Cup.

“I thought we fully deserved the victory. We took our moment when it came along and it’s a great finish.

“I was delighted for Slew. It was an eventful afternoon for him.”
