CITY should take inspiration from beating Derby when they travel to Stockport in the Vertu Trophy next month.
The Bantams were handed a testing tie in the round of 32 with a trip to the League One Hatters.
Dave Challinor’s side have made a flying start to life in the third tier after being crowned League Two champions last season.
Saturday’s 3-0 win at Burton lifted them up to third and on-loan Aston Villa striker Louie Barry has already bagged 14 goals - with eight in his last eight games.
But Graham Alexander is calling on the Bantams to rekindle the spirit that shocked Derby at Pride Park in the competition last season when the game comes around.
“We knew it would be tough whichever game we got,” he said.
“But you look at the tough ones we had last year and we acquitted ourselves really well – none more difficult than Derby away and we came through that with flying colours.
“We’ll prepare for it fully when it comes round. We’ve obviously got the FA Cup at Morecambe next week but I think it’s a really exciting game.
“Both teams will have a desire to win it. I can’t see them not taking it seriously either, so I think it will be a really competitive game when it comes off.”
City went all the way to the semi-finals last season – the furthest they had ever progressed in the Trophy.
They picked off Liverpool under-21s, Derby and Doncaster after the group stages before being denied a potential Wembley trip by Wycombe’s deflected winner in stoppage time in the semi-finals.
Alexander added: “We’re into the knock-out stages now so that adds an extra edge to the night.
“You can’t afford too many mistakes or you’re out the competition.
“We want to progress and stay in it as long as possible. We really enjoyed our run last season.
“The aim for us is to enjoy it again this year – and you only do that when you’re winning.”
City are waiting on confirmation of when the Edgeley Park clash will take place but it is likely to be Tuesday, December 10.
