NEWPORT boss Nelson Jardim felt his side kept a good grip on Andy Cook – despite the City talisman scoring a brilliant header.

Cook notched his seventh goal of the season when he found space to guide a powerful effort from Jay Benn’s cross beyond keeper Nick Townsend.

His first-half effort set the Bantams on the way to a 3-1 win at Valley Parade.

But Jardim thought his side generally coped well with Cook’s attacking threat.

“We were trying to stop the problems at the source, because we know once the ball is around him he’s a threat,” said the Portuguese head coach.

“Overall I think we’ve done well. Yes, he did score that goal but there were other occasions where we were in the right place at the right time.”

Newport had arrived in West Yorkshire following back-to-back home wins but suffered their fourth defeat in five games on their travels.

Jardim added: “It was not the result that we wanted but I thought we were good and I could see a lot of improvements from the other away games.

“We came back into the game to draw and in that period I felt we were the better team, then we conceded a second goal. That was a bit unfair and then the third came when we had lost our shape.

“I don’t think it was a two-goal difference game but that’s football.

“It was a defeat in which there were a lot of positives, and little details we have to make sure we get right.”
