THE Bradford Bulls have been severely ravaged by injuries this season, with captain Michael Lawrence having his fair share of setbacks.

Eamon O’Carroll currently has nine first-teamers absent but will finally be able to call upon ‘Bruno’ this weekend in a huge boost to the Bradford boss.

Speaking to the T&A, O'Carroll admitted that the return of his captain has been long overdue.

He said: "We've missed Bruno massively, we always do when he's out.

"He has worked so hard to put himself in the current position he's in. He looks fit, strong and ready to attack the rest of the season.

"On Monday he was due to do a non-player session, which are always quite brutal.

"I told him to not go and absolutely kill himself in that session because I firmly believe in his fitness and ability already, and I wanted him to be as fresh as possible for Sunday.

"As the professional he is, he told me that he wanted to do it, so we altered the session slightly for him and he completed it.

"It just proves his character; he's a great role model and it's no surprise that his character transfers to the field when he plays."

Chester Butler (oblique/hamstring) and Will Oakes (ankle) remain the longest absentees within the squad, and both players' return dates are unknown.

Oakes in particular has had real difficulties over the past two years, and still hasn't made his competitive debut for the Bulls.

“Chester is feeling positive, so we’ll look to progress his rehab in the coming days," said O'Carroll.

“He’s clearly frustrated that he can’t be a part of the team, as a lot of the lads are, but I’m hopeful that we can push on with Chester now.

“I’ve been in that situation as a player on several occasions throughout my playing career, and it can be really tough.

“You don’t even seem to enjoy the team winning because there’s an element of jealousy and you want to be a part of it.

“And then when the team has days like we did at Widnes and Barrow, you want to be able to offer your help but can’t because you’re out. It can be tiresome and extremely frustrating.

“Will’s (Oakes) the same as Chester – he’s had a really disruptive couple of years now and he just can’t seem to get over the line.

“He’s working extremely hard to overcome his latest setback and I’m sure he’ll come through strongly.”

Further discussing Oakes’ injury issues, O’Carroll said: “It’s been a very difficult time for Will.

“Injuries like his, where he’s been out for a longer period of time, it can be physically and mentally draining.

“Ultimately, everybody wants to play matches and be a big part of a team, rather than just training a couple of times a week.

“The club wanted to take Will on to help him, and with a view of getting him back in action this year.

“I know and the club know how much quality he possesses as a player, so it’s just a case of keeping him positive and making sure he remains positive throughout this difficult time.

“It will make him much stronger in the long run.”
