CITY are poised to add their sixth summer recruit.

Graham Alexander confirmed that the loan signing they have been waiting for will go through in the next couple of days.

The player in question was in the crowd at Valley Parade last night to watch the 2-1 win over Sunderland – and is expected to feature in the squad for the final pre-season friendly this weekend at Altrincham.

Alexander said: “We’ve got one coming in who’s already played a couple of 90 minutes in pre-season for his parent club. He’s chomping at the bit.

“It will be good to see him interact with the players and get up to speed.

“I think he’ll have seen he’s got a fight on his hands to get in the team.”

Goals from Andy Cook and Calum Kavanagh clinched victory for the Bantams in their only home appearance ahead of the new season.

New signings Neill Byrne and Antoni Sarcevic both played the full game on their first home outing as well as skipper Richie Smallwood and keeper Sam Walker.

Boss Alexander added: “We’re looking for performances, it’s not particularly about results. It’s the relationships and taking our tactical work from the training pitch into the game, in and out of possession.

“I saw that and a great commitment from the players to try to do the right things.

“We’ve got 90 minutes into four of the players, three outfield, which is a bonus.

“We’ve also got good minutes into lads who have missed a little bit of pre-season and returned.”

Alexander is pleased with how well Kavanagh, Aden Baldwin and Brad Halliday have responded after their delayed start.

“The work they did themselves with the off-season programme kept them in really good shape.

“That’s why we talk to players all the time about the importance of looking after yourself.

“If you miss 10 days, you can pick up the pace really quickly.

“Injuries happen in football but if you’re in really good condition at the start, your recovery and rehab is quicker. Every testament to those players for coming back in good shape.

“The players who have done the whole pre-season have worked exceptionally hard and hopefully they are seeing the benefits of that.

“We want to play at a tempo and put teams under pressure, whether they’ve got the ball or we have.

“We can’t set our bar by who we’re playing or where or what time of the week it is.

“We need to have a standard that we reach all the time and that’s where you get consistency.

“We’re getting our sharpness but we couldn’t have that too early because we needed a good base of endurance.

“There’s still more to come. We’re only four-and-half-weeks into it and there’s a long way to go.

“But the progress we’ve made game-by-game has been steady and that’s really important.”
