BRADFORD Bulls head coach Eamon O’Carroll has expressed his frustration with one law change for the 2024 season but conceded it’s best for the game.
For this current campaign the RFL have introduced match limits for all professionals to decrease their exposure to head collisions and possible concussions, with younger players restricted to less playing time than their older team-mates.
It’s meant that several of Bulls’ younger players including Mitch Souter and Jayden Myers have been restricted to less time on the field in recent weeks.
Their minutes on the pitch will continue to be monitored and shared in the latter stages of the campaign too.
Giving his thoughts on the situation, O’Carroll said: “They’re very frustrated (Souter and Myers).
“Obviously, they want to be playing in every single game but fortunately, it’s not just a rule that’s enforced on the Bradford Bulls, it’s part of the game in 2024 and we all must take that into account.
“Perhaps, I could have managed the minutes of certain players a bit better in the early stages of the season, but we didn’t feel that we were in a position to do so.”
O’Carroll went on to add: “I understand where the game is currently at and what they are trying to do, but it’s frustrating because as a coach and ex-player you know that you’re only going to get better and develop when you’re playing consistently.
“That’s restricted for now but when I put my ‘love of the game hat on’ then I can understand why they are trying to do it.
“So, there is an element of frustration for my boys, but the game comes first.”
Myers is set to return to the fold this weekend for Bulls’ fixture with York in replace of the suspended Jorge Taufua on the wing, and O’Carroll expressed his delight to have the youngster back and involved.
He said: “Jayden and Jorge are different wingers but we’re very happy to have Jayden back in the fold.
“He brings lots of energy to the table; he wants to compete, and I think he’s got better with each game he’s played.
“There has been an element of frustration for Jayden with his recent game time, but he’s been extremely professional in what he’s done whilst he’s been out.
“He’s been a great person to have around the group despite his young age, and most importantly, he’s trusted by everyone in the group.”
Franklin Pele, who terrified the Dewsbury defence on his Betfred Championship debut, is also set for a comeback this weekend after returning from his one-match suspension.
“Franklin will be a real welcome addition,” O’Carroll stated.
“He’s worked extremely hard since he arrived here and is looking to push on.
“With his size and stature, everyone takes notice when he walks into a room and it’s the same when he’s on the pitch, so it will be great to have him back.”
