MARK Hughes has described his City sacking as “ludicrous” as he lined up a potential second shot as Wales manager.

The Welsh are looking for a new boss after Rob Page’s three-and-a-half year tenure was ended last week following their failure to qualify for the Euros.

Hughes began his managerial career in the national role and would be open to another go as he aims to bounce back from his Valley Parade departure.

City axed Hughes in October following a sluggish start to last season which saw them win only three of the first 11 games.

“It was ludicrous to get rid of me if I’m honest,” Hughes said in an interview with the Sun.

“I got sacked after back-to-back defeats but we weren’t on a horrendous run, I would suggest.

“The previous time I’d lost back-to-back was about six months before and I was convinced I could still have taken them up because of the players we had.”

Hughes steered the Bantams to the play-offs in 2023 – the only time they have done that in five seasons back in League Two.

But having beaten Carlisle 1-0 in the semi-final first leg, they lost the return 3-1 after extra-time.

Hughes came in for heavy criticism for his approach at Brunton Park and the decision to substitute winger Scott Banks with centre half Matty Platt after City had scored to level the aggregate.

Eight months on from being shown the door at Valley Parade, the 60-year-old is keen for another crack at management.

"I’d like to get back in because I have the enthusiasm for a new challenge.

“I took the Bradford job to see if I still did have that enthusiasm and I found out that I did within a week of going there.

“I still have it now – I feel fit and refreshed.”
