CALLUM Johnson has had a relatively successful career so far, having won promotion from League Two with Accrington and Mansfield, playing a key role in both successes.
But the right back’s footballing existence has been a fairly nomadic one too.
He is still only 27, but since leaving boyhood club Middlesbrough in 2018, he has played for Stanley, Portsmouth, Fleetwood, Ross County and finally the Stags.
Johnson now finds himself with the Bantams, who have made a habit of offering longer contracts to players in the last couple of years.
Perhaps due to his injury issues over the past few seasons, the Teessider has only arrived in BD8 on an initial one-year deal, but he admitted to the T&A he would love to be part of the City side for a long time to come.
He said: “I’d definitely like to be here for a number of years.
“It’s a massive club, based not too far away from my home, and I’d like to think I could be successful here.”
Johnson knows there are no guarantees in this sport though, admitting: “Football’s mad because you just never know what’s coming.
“I signed a two-year contract at Portsmouth with an option to stay longer, and I thought I’d have been there for at least the initial length of that deal.
“I probably would have been had the manager stayed, but they changed him and a few things went on there, so that was out of my control.
“I went up to Scotland, but I found that was too far away for my liking.
“I came back, went to Mansfield, but had a couple of injuries or I’d have probably been offered a new contract there after this season.
“Things are sometimes out of your control and maybe they happen for a reason.”
