CITY did the Antoni Sarcevic deal inside a week – despite heavy competition from rival League Two clubs.

Sarcevic’s arrival at Valley Parade yesterday was a statement start in the summer recruitment for Graham Alexander.

The experienced midfielder, who has won promotion five times from the fourth tier, has signed for a minimum two years.

There was understandably plenty of interest for the 32-year-old following Stockport’s title win. The Hatters also offered him a new deal which he turned down.

City’s move happened very quickly – with Sarcevic agreeing to the deal within 72 hours of sitting down with Alexander.

It is 10 years since Sarcevic scored the promotion-winning free-kick for Alexander’s Fleetwood against Burton at Wembley and the pair have remained on good terms since.

The Bantams boss tried to sign him again at Salford before the Covid season but the player instead opted to join Bolton.

But their good relationship ensured they did not hang about when City made their intentions known last week.

The Bantams are expected to unveil a second signing early next week to build on the feelgood factor created by the capture of Sarcevic.

But Alexander played down any suggestion that they have stolen a march on the rest of the division – or dished out an early warning that they mean business.

“There might be a bit of that with some people but it’s quite fleeting,” said the City chief.

“I know every team is getting on with their own business, that’s how it is at this time of the year.

“It’s more important for us and our supporters, our players and our staff members to know that we’re serious about trying to create a successful squad.

“We want to go for players that we know will improve us.

“For me, the impression you make is for us rather than for anybody else.”

Sarcevic scored eight goals in 37 appearances for Stockport last season – but missed both of their draws against City through injury.

He has only played at Valley Parade four times, winning the decisive penalty in Stockport's victory on his last visit in October 2022.

Sarcevic was also sent off at City for Plymouth two years earlier.
