GRANT McCann criticised the Valley Parade pitch – but said Doncaster had played on a worse one at Walsall.

The Rovers boss felt his side let City off the hook as Tyler Smith came back to bite his old club.

The state of the playing surface was a big talking point ahead of the 1-1 draw.

McCann expected it to be tough but thought his players made light of the conditions.

“I’m really disappointed we’ve drawn the game,” he said. “I thought we were outstanding in the first half.

“We need to get to that point when we’ve got teams on the ropes that we need to kill them off and we will do.

“We passed around them and exploited the angles and were very good on a shocking pitch. But this pitch was better than Walsall’s pitch on Saturday – it’s a little bit flatter.

“We knew there would be a reaction from Graham (Alexander) and his team. They are combative but we had some good opportunities and had chances to score in the second half.

“Any other time you come to Bradford and it’s a decent point but I’m disappointed because of the way we played.”

McCann was not surprised to see Smith pop up with the equaliser and score against Doncaster for the second time this season.

“I know Tyler, I’ve signed him twice and that’s what he does. People like that you’ve got to be marking.

“We got everything right apart from that killer edge and the second goal that would most certainly have won us the game.

“We should have come away with three points but we haven’t. Credit to Bradford, they found that moment and they’ve scored.”

McCann was one of seven bookings from ref Leigh Doughty before half-time.

“I don’t know what the referee was doing. He was booking anyone for any tackle – it was ridiculous.

“Second half he calmed himself down. It’s just frustrating.

“I shouldn’t have raised my arms, that’s what it was, but you get frustrated on the sidelines with little things.”
