BULLS’ interim head coach Lee Greenwood feels desperately sorry for the “nightmare” Masi Matongo is going through.
The luckless prop dislocated his shoulder yet again in the Betfred Championship play-off eliminator win over York last Sunday and looks set for several months on the sidelines.
He would definitely have been selected for this weekend’s semi-final against Toulouse too, with Greenwood saying: “It’s a nightmare for Masi, and some lads have it where they’re just really unfortunate like that.
“You see some players who don’t look after themselves properly, but they never seem to get injured, and then guys who do all the right things, have great attitudes and they’re just unlucky.
"Masi certainly falls into that latter category.
“It’s the third time Masi’s done his shoulder now and it’s not like dislocating a finger, it’s a really important joint in rugby league.
“I’m disappointed for him because he’s played his best games for us in his last two, and he would have been a shoo-in to face Toulouse.
“Unfortunately there’s not really any time to dwell on it, because it’s all hands to the pump for us ahead of Toulouse, but we’ll give Masi the support he needs where we can.”
Ebon Scurr will almost certainly miss the rest of the season with a fractured hand, but otherwise Greenwood was coy on injuries, with the likes of Jayden Myers (calf) in a race against time to make the trip to France.
The interim boss did not name names but said: “We’re massively short on bodies for Saturday, but everyone came through last Sunday except Masi.
“We’ll see who we decide to call upon for Toulouse but there are not many left, it’s almost last man standing.
“I’m not sure of the state Toulouse are in, because they’ve changed their side quite a bit over the last few weeks, which could be through injuries, but some of it might have been planned rotation too (given their play-off berth has been secure for a while).
“They’ll have had two weeks rest before facing us too, which might have allowed them to get some players back.”
Fortunately, the fit members of Greenwood’s squad have not had any issues with travelling out to France.
He said: “All the lads are sorted and ready to go, there’s not been anybody struggling to get time off.
“That suggests they’ve either got really understanding employers or it says more about the lads themselves.
“Not one of them was debating whether they couldn’t go, because they realise the magnitude of the game.”
