BULLS’ on-loan full-back Connor Wynne admits there have been times this year where he has not wanted to train or play any more, so he is thankful for his partner’s support.
Wynne has spent most of this year on the sidelines with injury, and has had to face up to the fact that hometown club Hull FC will be letting him go at the end of this season.
It has been a lot for the 22-year-old to cope with, and he said: “It’s been very tough, and I’ve had moments with my partner this year where I’ve told her I don’t want to play any more.
“There have been times I’ve not wanted to go training or play matches, but she said I’d get through it.
“I’ve stuck at it and will continue to do so, as good times often come from the bad, and hopefully I’ll soon get back to the best version of myself.”
While Bulls interim head coach Lee Greenwood praised Wynne for “showing some nice touches” on his return against Swinton after six weeks out injured, he felt that the player’s fitness was not quite there, having spent so long off the field in the last few months.
If Ben Blackmore and Brad England had not dropped out of the squad late on, Wynne is unlikely to have even played last Sunday.
He reflected: “I thought I did well, but with it being my first game back, I was probably a bit rusty.
“It’s definitely tough to be as on it physically when you’ve not been playing, when you have team-mates who’ve been playing week in, week out.
“Even including my loan at Newcastle and reserves games, I’ve probably only played 10 times this year, which is the least I’ve had in a long time.
“It’s my first year of rugby league where I’ve constantly had injuries.
“I’m used to being on the pitch 24/7, whereas I’ve had to look after myself a lot more this year with my body breaking down.”
But the Swinton game has given Wynne a confidence boost, and he said: “It was unreal to get back out there after a challenging year.
“I was on the wing rather than at full-back, but I’ll play anywhere, centre, half-back, hooker, even at 13 where I’ve been before, as long as I can help the team.
“To get fully up to standard with my fitness is probably going to take two or three more games, so it’s just about whether I can keep my foot in the door.
“I feel like at my best I can play a big part in this team, and I hope I can help push us to the promotion we want, if I can get the trust of Lee and Brian (Noble).”
The season is winding down with Wynne as yet unattached for 2024, but he said: “Hopefully within the next month I’ll have something to hand.
“My agent and I are in talks but there’s no rush.
“I don’t really have a leg to stand on at the moment, having not had the best season, but I hope I can kick on now, get where I want to be and get my future sorted.”
