LEE Greenwood insists he is happy to keep “holding the fort” as he once again dismissed the prospect of taking the Bulls helm full time.
They head to Newcastle tonight for the Magic Weekend curtain-raiser aiming for a third straight win under the interim boss.
But Greenwood repeated his stance that his double act with Brian Noble remains a short-term fix-it until a new coach is unveiled.
“I’m getting bored about saying this but I know myself and Brian are taking this game,” he said. “That’s all we’re looking to at the minute.
“It gives us a long weekend then without a game. I think the club were having some more discussions with people either late last week or early this week.
“We’re just holding the fort as I said when we first came in to do it.
“If that goes on a few more weeks or ends after the game, then it’s all good for me. It’s not my decision.
“We’re just doing the best we can putting things in place like we think any coach would want to anyway.
“We’re setting it up as well as we can for when a new coach comes in.”
Greenwood stepped up from his assistant role after Mark Dunning’s exit last month. The former Dewsbury coach has overseen back-to-back victories over Swinton and Keighley - but has no ambitions to extend his spell in charge.
“I’m not a stranger to it. I’ve obviously coached at clubs before so it’s not unique to me.
“But I’ve enjoyed working with Brian, we work well together on the training field, and we’ve enjoyed the players being receptive and getting behind it.
“There could have been a disillusioned feel when a coach leaves but the lads have responded well, been professional and just cracked on giving 100 per cent with everything we’re doing in training.
“I can’t speak for the players. We may have won those two games anyway regardless of any changes.
“All we’ve done is try to put some things in place that make us more consistent.
“It’s only been two games anyway, so if it goes on another two that’s still short term for me.
“I’ve not thought about if we win a few more, I want to get it. It’s not like that at all.
“I’m still totally happy with holding the fort for however longer it might be and then hoping to work with a new person coming in.
“Things are naturally nicer when you win. It puts smiles on faces so let’s hope we can continue that.”
Bottom club Newcastle have not won in the Championship since the opening day. But Greenwood will not expect or accept any complacency.
“If that creeps in then we’ll be struggling,” he warned. “It shouldn’t do because we went to Barrow three weeks ago and got absolutely smashed.
“If we think we just have to turn up to beat them then I know exactly what will happen. We’ll get beaten like we did last year.
“We’ve not made a thing of it. I think we’ve made some positive changes over the past couple of weeks and this is another step on the ladder of the challenges that we’ve been facing.
“We’ve passed some challenges so far but we’ve still got a long way to go.”
