BULLS prop Jordan Baldwinson is thankful for the increased input of club legend Brian Noble, as he admits the pack have made added mobility a priority.
The club’s front-rowers in particular came in for plenty of stick last season for a perceived lack of dynamism, but a line-up of Baldwinson, Jordan Lilley and Fenton Rogers in there, with pocket rocket Ebon Scurr on the interchange bench, against Swinton last time out could hardly have that same criticism levelled at them.
Baldwinson told the T&A: “We’ve worked on having a more mobile front row in particular.
“Last season’s pack was a big, powerful one, but not very mobile, and there were only a few lads, in myself, Sam Hallas and maybe Tom Doyle, who could last a while and do big minutes.
“You want a pack that keep producing repeat efforts which we can do now we’re more mobile.
“We’re not the finished article yet, because there’s times we’ve done well this season, and others where we’ve dropped off.
“Brian has taken ownership of that since he’s come in to help Greeny (interim head coach Lee Greenwood), working closely with the forwards and telling us what we’ve been doing well and what’s been going badly.
“It’s been constructive feedback, and I’ve enjoyed working with the boys and him, as he’s taught us some useful things.”
Baldwinson has been something of a teacher himself this season.
He was added to the club’s leadership group by previous head coach Mark Dunning, and has taken on real responsibility given the lengthy injury absences of Michael Lawrence, Bodene Thompson and Jack Walker.
The prop reflected: “I’ve massively enjoyed having that responsibility.
“It’s tough losing strike players like Michael, Bodene and Jack, and it’s hard to see so many important players out.
“But that’s when those of us who are fit have got to roll up our sleeves and step up and people have done in their absence.
“Mark asked me to take on that extra responsibility and I’ve enjoyed being a real voice in the changing room and on the pitch.
“I’ve tried to be there for the lads when things have got tough, but it will be nice to have Michael and Bodene back, as it takes a bit of pressure off me in that forward pack.”
Unlike his captain and vice-captain, Baldwinson has played in all 11 Betfred Championship games for Bulls this season, starting the last nine.
He said: “It’s nice to be playing regularly and I feel like I’ve found my feet this season.
“I’ve grown in confidence and that’s showing in my performances.
“The back end of last season was disappointing because I was just coming off the back of an injury, then suffered another one.
“I really wanted to make my mark on the team this year and try to start more games, just keeping focused on being the best I can be every week.”
Baldwinson added: “I really enjoy it here and I feel like I’ve found my home now.
“I don’t want to move around any more, because I love the fans and the club, and want to help them get back to where they deserve to be.”
