YOUNG Bradford Bulls talent Jayden Myers is feeling settled at centre after playing there against Batley and Halifax, after making a brave admission to head coach Mark Dunning just before those two starts.
Myers, who turned 20 last month, had been blooded in the Betfred Challenge Cup wins over York Acorn and Midlands Hurricanes, but it was a feather in his cap to be handed his Championship debut at Odsal against the Bulldogs, then play again six days later in a ferocious derby atmosphere at The Shay.
Bulls lost that cup clash 26-0, but they had beaten Fax under a fortnight earlier at the same venue, a game Myers might have played in.
He told the T&A: "I had the game against York Acorn on the right wing, and then Dee Foggin-Johnston was injured for the league fixture against Halifax.
"I'd never been on the left wing before, but Mark mentioned he might try me there in Dee's absence.
"I wasn't confident about playing there though, and told Mark that.
"He said it'd be a massive challenge for me if that was the case and he wanted me to be ready, so he really looked out for me in that moment.
"He brought in Luis Roberts from Leeds to play there instead and he did really well.
"As it happened, Joe Arundel got injured in that game, so I've now played at centre against Batley and Fax since and really tried my best there."
It was Dunning who discovered Myers, so it is little surprise the youngster felt able to broach that tricky subject with his head coach.
He said: "I can definitely develop on being out on the wing, but I prefer being at centre.
"That's where I started as a kid at Stanningley, but I went out on the wing for a few games, and that was when Mark saw me and picked me up for the scholarship side at Bulls.
"I was always out on the wing when I played scholarship, but then I got a little bigger and went back to centre when I moved up to the academy.
"I much prefer it there because you do more defending and are more involved in the game.
"I feel more comfortable at centre, particularly in attack, but I've told Mark I'm happy to play on the wing if that's where he needs me."
Bulls' regular starting centres are Arundel and Kieran Gill, with Myers full of praise for the experienced pair.
He said: "They don't just help me when I play alongside them in games, in training they're happy to sit and run through video with me.
"Joe's been in Super League and Kieran used to play for Castleford, and it's great to be learning from two of the best centres in the Championship.
"The wingers, Dee and Ben (Blackmore), do drills with me at training too and are always talking about where I can improve.
"Everyone helps out us younger lads, and the older players don't see us any differently to the rest of the squad."
Most would expect Arundel to regain his starting place alongside Gill once he returns from injury, but despite his clear respect for the former Wakefield star, Myers is not willing to accept being second fiddle.
He said: “I can fight to get that starting shirt.
“Right now, I’m not at Joe or Kieran’s level, but no-one has seen the extent of what I can do, as I’ve not quite got to 100 per cent yet this season.
“I don’t want to just be the player who comes in if someone gets injured.
“While Joe and Kieran help me, I’m also there to compete with them too.”
