MARK Dunning thinks Bulls fans won’t see all of star signing Michael Lawrence’s best work next season.

The Odsal coach is cock-a-hoop to have landed the Huddersfield legend as the figurehead of his team rebuild.

The 32-year-old, who made over 300 appearances in a stellar career at the Giants, was one of the stand-out new recruits along with the likes of Leeds duo Bodene Thompson and Jack Walker.

Jamaica international Lawrence is so keen to get going that he joined up for the Bulls pre-season training ahead of schedule following his World Cup exploits.

Dunning insists the forward will have a major impact in the changing room as well as in the thick of Championship battle.

But supporters, excited by his arrival, may not catch everything that Lawrence will bring to the middles.

Dunning said: “I think if you look at Michael over the last five years, he’s been very close to the top tackler and effort-based things throughout the game.

“That’s what we are looking for, those 'one-percenters' that, no disrespect, Joe Public don’t see.

“It’s players, coaches and analysts that see the sorts of things that Michael does. They are invaluable to any team and will be really appreciated with us next year.”

Dunning has stressed the importance of signing strong characters to provide a backbone that was lacking from the Bulls at times during their underwhelming 2022 campaign.

The coach expects a stronger reaction in “sticky situations” going into his first full season at the helm.

And he is convinced that the battle-hardened Lawrence will lead from the front and inspire younger team-mates around him.

“By no means is Michael on the way out,” added Dunning. “I still think he’s got an awful lot to offer the game.

“I think the effect that he’ll have on some of our young blokes will be invaluable as well.

“The likes of Ebon Scurr and Marcus Green and people like that looking at and working with Bodene Thompson and Michael Lawrence can only bring them on in leaps and bounds.

“I think that’s a really exciting thing throughout the club.”

With two months to go until the curtain-raiser against Whitehaven, the Bulls are finalising their pre-season schedule. They are expected to play four warm-up games.

Dunning said: “The players are under no illusions. We’re going to be a lot fitter than we have been.

“That’s going to be the base on which we play the style of rugby we’re looking to do next year.

"There's a lot of gelling to do and that's a good part of pre-season."
