LEYTON Orient are in Wellens heaven this season as they boss League Two.

The O’s have rattled up 45 points from the first 19 games to open a five-point lead at the top.

They are already 11 clear of fourth-placed Barrow to build up an impressive cushion in the automatic promotion spots.

It has been a dream start under Richie Wellens, who took over in March when the London side were fourth from bottom and still looking over their shoulders.

Wellens, who had been interested in the City job before Mark Hughes was appointed, pulled them well clear - and can do seemingly do no wrong this season.

After four away games in November, their first home date in over a month will have the extra buzz from celebrating the manager’s new contract.

Wellens penned a fresh deal committing to Leyton Orient for another two seasons after this one.

Director of football Martin Ling said: “Results have been unbelievable since he stepped through the door, both at the back end of last season and how we've started this season.”

Wellens feels that the O’s are a “club going in the right direction”.

He told the club website: "For me, it was an easy decision, we now need to kick on and achieve what is our ultimate aim.

"I’ve felt the warmth since day one, so I just want to ask the supporters to keep on supporting me and the team and backing us in your numbers.

"It feels good, like we could achieve something special together, so just keep doing what you’re doing."

That’s certainly his wish with a team who have won seven out of nine at the Breyer Group Stadium - with seven clean sheets.

They have conceded just four goals at home - two from Newport in their only defeat and two against bottom club Hartlepool, although the O’s won 4-2. Northampton took a point away in a goalless draw.
