FORMER City loanee Matty Etherington has been appointed as Crawley’s third manager of the season.

Etherington succeeds Lewis Young, who announced earlier that he had left the club after eight years.

Young, who made over 200 appearances for Crawley, had been in charge for the previous 10 games - including their 1-1 draw at Valley Parade a month ago.

He had been promoted from assistant manager after Kevin Betsy was sacked.

Etherington joins Crawley from Peterborough where he had been in charge of the under-23s.

He finished a 17-year playing career in 2014 in the Premier League with Stoke.

Etherington also had a two-month loan with the Bantams under Nicky Law in 2001. He made 13 appearances and scored one goal against Watford.

The 41-year-old, who will be assisted by Simon Davies, has been given an 18-month contact by Crawley.

Etherington said: “I have had really positive discussions with the owners over a period of time.

“The biggest thing for me is attacking and scoring goals. If you can get that right, along with a lot of other things, you have always got a chance.”

Etherington's father Peter was briefly commercial manager and then chief executive at City.

But he lasted only a season before pulling out of a planned £2.5 million investment to buy a 50 per cent stake in 2006.
