Nick Scruton would sign on the dotted line tomorrow.
Despite having a year still remaining on his contract at Bradford – and even with wild rumours of a possible return to Leeds still swirling around – the England prop is ready to commit his long-term future to the club.
Since arriving ahead of the 2009 campaign, Scruton’s reputation has sky-rocketed, his uncompromising physical style and bone-shuddering hits becoming an integral part of the Bulls pack.
In a relatively short space of time, the Odsal faithful have taken the former Rhino to their hearts. The feeling is mutual.
“I just want to do my best now and play my best rugby for Bradford,” said the 25-year-old enforcer. “I want to stay here for as long as I can.
“If I’m playing well, hopefully they’ll be keen to keep me and we can sort it out pretty soon.
“I know there have been rumours about me joining Leeds but I don’t know where these rumours come from or who sits down and plots them.
“My mum phoned me and asked if I had something to tell her because she’d even heard I was signing for Leeds.
“But I’ve settled right in at Bradford. This is my team now and I want to stay here for as long as I can. If I’m playing well I’m sure I’ll be able to do that.”
Scruton’s improvement has not gone unnoticed outside of Bradford either.
Good form in the first half of last season earned him a surprise England call-up for the mid-season international against France before retaining his place in the train-on squad for the autumn’s Four Nations tournament.
Although the Morley-born star missed the final cut on both occasions, he remains upbeat about the experience.
After featuring for his country in the Garry Purdham Memorial match against Cumbria, it has made him more determined to earn a Test debut in 2011.
“There are nowt but positives,” said Scruton. “I was disappointed not to make that tour but it’s given me the kick up the bum for me to really kick on now.
“I’m looking for a big season because I’m desperate to be involved in that international side.
“It was nice to sing that national anthem. It may only have been a friendly against Cumbria but I took it seriously – it was like a Test match to me.”
Currently recovering from an off-season hernia operation, Scruton expects to be back fighting fit in time for the new campaign.
He said: “It’s been going good. I had a nice break in Australia with my girlfriend and I dreaded coming back to pre-season but once I got back, I was loving it.
“It’s been tough but it’s been a good pre-season so far. Getting to know Mick and the new lads has made it really enjoyable.”
