Adam O’Brien has returned to Bradford with a spring in his step after playing his part in England Academy’s first series win against Australia Schoolboys in six years.
The Bulls hooker came off the bench in both Tests against the tourists as they followed up victory in the opener with a 34-22 triumph last week.
There has been no time for extended celebrations, with O’Brien returning to club training on Monday ready to push for a place in the Boxing Day friendly against Castleford.
“It was a great achievement by the lads,” said O’Brien. “For the Aussies to come over and us to beat them twice in a week was great for the lads.
“It was a great victory and a great experience for me.
“The lads were absolutely buzzing. We couldn’t believe it and we’ll go down in history after beating the Aussies twice so we’re chuffed to bits.
“I’ve taken a lot from the experience. It’ll help me and do so much for my career. But I’m back with the Bradford lads now and I’m looking forward to the Christmas period.”
Still only 17, O’Brien will still qualify for a place in the England Academy team next season and he believes their recent success prove criticism of the national-team set-up is premature.
“There can’t be too much criticism because if you look at the youth coming through and what we’ve just done, there’s a bright future,” he said.
“Fingers crossed, in the next few years we should be pushing through and we’ll see how it goes.
“Steve Mac will be putting things in place for the future and it’s changing round now.”
O’Brien was joined in the England Academy side for both Tests by club-mate George Burgess, whose departure from Odsal looks set to be confirmed tomorrow.
As reported in the Telegraph & Argus last month, the 18-year-old prop will join brother Sam at South Sydney Rabbitohs on a permanent deal.
