Officials will take centre stage in tomorrow’s derby clash between Bradford and Leeds, as Jamie Langley admitted players are still unsure on rules at the ruck.

Wrestling has been high on the agenda since Rhinos centre Keith Senior hit out at referee Richard Silverwood for his handling of the World Club Challenge.

Leeds lost that clash with Melbourne Storm after the Australian champions were allowed to consistently slow down play-the-balls by using the so-called 'spoiling' tactics that have become ever more prevalent in Super League.

The Bulls too fell foul of Silverwood in last week’s 19-12 win against Harlequins, when the Londoners frequently appeared to get away with lying on in the tackle.

So far this season, interpretations have varied depending on the official and Langley admits researching the referee has become a key part of preparations, with Phil Bentham the man in the middle on Thursday.

“It’s tough,” he said. “Different refs have different interpretations.

“Some refs will let you stay in there a bit longer and some refs, as soon as you hit the floor will be calling ‘move’.

“So there are different interpretations and you probably do look at that going into the game so you can get an idea of what to expect. We do work on that during the week.

“At the weekend, we did have a lot of time in the rucks and it probably suited Harlequins a bit more. We wanted to play a bit more of a fast and flowing game but it wasn’t to be.

“There are inconsistencies but everyone’s only human at the end of the day and that’s what it’s going to be like. You just have to play the cards that are dealt really.”

Langley understands the importance of derby day more than most, having faced off against the old enemy every year since 2003.

And the all-action back-rower is confident the excitement of the occasion will bring out the best in the Bulls.

He said: “It’s really exciting for the players, this sort of game, and the fans are always questioning you about it.

“It’s what’s on the fans’ minds and some will say they don’t care what happens during the season as long as we beat Leeds.

“I suppose it does make it extra special for the players and we really enjoy these games. We’ve got a few players who are new to this but they’ll be ready for it.”
