Personal guilt is driving Dave Halley ahead of Sunday’s home opener against St Helens.
To a man, the Bulls were left deflated by defeat in last week’s round-one Super League clash at Huddersfield but Halley was also critical of his own performance.
The pacy full back did not come close to meeting the standards he has set for himself but sees Sunday’s clash with Saints as the perfect chance to put things right.
“The massive word is disappointment and an opportunity we’ve lost there,” said Halley.
“It was a weird game in a way. Things just didn’t click and the timing wasn’t quite there, which is a massive factor. We’ve been out on the training field working hard this week to get things right.
“There weren’t massive structural problems but some of us let ourselves down. Personally, I don’t think I had a good game.
“But you’ve got 27 rounds so you can’t start getting really down in your first game.
“We’ve got week-to-week games now so you get the chance to put it right this week – and there’s no better team to do it against than Grand Finalists St Helens.”
Halley believes the errors that crept into the Bulls’ game at Huddersfield were largely down to a lack of familiarity in combinations.
Bradford started with a new half-back pairing of Matt Orford and Brett Kearney at the Galpharm Stadium and fellow new arrival Heath L’Estrange at hooker.
As another key player in the spine of the team, Halley admits he is still learning to play off the new halves but insists it won’t be long before it all clicks.
He said: “We’ve got a new nine, six and seven. They’re pivotal roles in the team and are just learning to play off each other.
“Full back’s also a pivotal role and I’m just learning to time myself off great players like Brett and Matt. I’m sure it’ll come.
“I like to have a run at the defence, especially in their half. Usually I’m coming round the back, so if I’m taking the ball and hitting the line, it’s all about timing and that’s what we need to get right on the training field.”
