Chuffed Wayne Godwin can “see light at the end of the tunnel” after his broken leg setback.

The Bulls hooker has been a frustrated spectator since fracturing his tibia at Wigan in March, just three games into the current season.

But he is making good progress and had his pot removed last week, revealing positive news.

“The specialist was absolutely buzzing and really happy with it,” explained Godwin.

“If anything he thinks I’m in front of where he expected me to be.

“The bone’s healed nicely and he just said no contact for two weeks until I’ve got the mobility back in my ankle and got the leg strengthened up.

“I’m just taking it step by step as my ankle swells sometimes, so I’ve got to keep my mobility good.

“There’s loads of little exercises I’m doing to build my leg back up but it’s already feeling better.”

Godwin – out for the longest period in his career so far – is expected to be back in action later next month but prefers not to set an exact date for his return.

“I don’t want to do that so I won’t be disappointed if I don’t make it,” he said.

“I’m playing it by ear but I’ll definitely get back before the end of the season. It’s just nice to have the pot off now.

“I’ve only been swimming, grappling and doing upper body weights for around eight weeks, so it’s been nice to do something different, and at least I can see a bit of light at the end of the tunnel.

“I’m on the cross-trainer, bike and swimming at the minute but I’ll progress to jogging and running and take it from there.”

The former Castleford and Hull FC star is eager to lend his skills and experience to the cause as the Bulls bid to galvanise their campaign.

Julien Rinaldi has come in as a short-term replacement to help first-choice hooker Terry Newton.

But Godwin, 27, admitted: “I just want to get back playing rugby, whether it’s for the first team or 21s. I’m a bit old for 18s now but I’d play for my local club!

“I will be fresh and hopefully I can offer something different but Tez and Jules are playing well in that position.

“Obviously though, I want to come back and play first team. I feel I’ve still got a lot to offer the side and hopefully when I get back I can be a part of that.”

Rinaldi’s deal is due to expire at the end of June, so the road may be clear then for livewire Godwin to resume his back-up role off the Bulls bench.
