On-song Ben Jeffries hopes producing his best Bulls football yet will earn him a new Odsal contract.
The Aussie playmaker’s current deal is up at the end of the campaign but he has been outstanding of late and is sure to be high on coach Steve McNamara’s agenda.
Jeffries bossed victories over St Helens and Wakefield to demonstrate his true worth to the side and admits: “I’m happy with how I’m playing. There’s been a couple of mistakes but hopefully I can keep it up for the next few weeks and on until the end of the season.
“I think it probably is my best spell since I joined.
“I’ve not heard anything from Bradford yet but I’m not going to wait around too long.
“I like to have decisions made sooner rather than later.
“I’ve told Macca I want to stay though and my manager is on to it.
“The ball is in their court but hopefully it will get rolling now.”
Only Harlequins No 7 Danny Orr has more try assists than Jeffries in the entire Super League competition.
The elusive stand-off has created a dozen scores for his team-mates, including touchdowns for Paul Sykes and Mike Worrincy in Saturday’s impressive win over Wakefield.
He found the killer pass both times and has been attacking the line with added pace in recent weeks.
Having filled in for Paul Deacon at scrum half, Jeffries has reverted back to stand-off for the last two games and it is no coincidence his side have proved more potent and dynamic.
“I do prefer being second receiver,” he admitted. “I like being a bit wider with a bit more time to play. Then, the more I take the line on, the more chance I have of bursting through or putting someone else through a gap.
“You put the defensive line in two minds as opposed to when you just stand and deliver, which is what can happen at first receiver.
“It’s important you have one half-back controlling and the other as a ball player or running.”
Jeffries – who is aiming to have his quota status relaxed to aid his bid to stay – continued: “Ball players always want their blokes to hit holes and run good lines.
“We’ve got plenty who do that at Bradford but Sykesy and Mick Worrincy in particular are very good at it and it’s paying off.”
Those wins have seen the Bulls edge up to tenth and revitalise their campaign.
Jeffries, 28, was pivotal against his former club and he added: “I’m not being arrogant but I don’t think Wakey were ever going to beat us. We were very focused and it was really important for us to back up after Saints.
“All the boys have been very determined to put things right since that embarrassment against Warrington when we were booed off the field.”
Annoyingly, after their Challenge Cup disaster against Catalans, they now have no fixture this weekend.
“I’m still peeved about France but there’s nothing we can do about it now,” said Jeffries. “We can have a rest and it’s important to get away from rugby and freshen up mentally so we come back in on Monday ready to go again.”
