Bulls match-winner Dave Halley today insisted: Ben Jeffries is the real hero.
Halley raced over with only SIX seconds to spare as Bradford finally rid their Super League duck with a thrilling last-gasp success over Catalans Dragons.
It was his first appearance of the year, having just come back from a loan spell at Wakefield, and proved the perfect way to celebrate.
But Halley refused to accept the plaudits after the 30-24 triumph in Perpignan, saying: “It was all down to BJ (Jeffries).
“It was great how he set it up. He put on some quality footwork, skipped away as Catalans put the pressure on and then came up with the final pass. I just had to finish it of – but I was happy to do that!”
The Bulls had set up for a drop goal with the scores level at 24-24 but Catalans’ defenders forced kicker Paul Sykes to hand on to Jeffries.
Instead of rushing a shot himself, the stand-off showed great vision, coolly taking on the line, breaking through and then holding his nerve to send jubilant Halley in at the corner.
Halley hopes the gritty victory will now kick-start Bradford’s campaign and the 22-year-old said: “It’s massive getting that win. That’s what we needed.
“We had to grind it out and we were a bit worried after losing a big lead. But the same happened last year when we scored in the last minute. It got our season going and we hope this will do the same.”
Bradford looked anything but a side out of sorts when they stormed into an 18-6 lead.
But Catalans hit back strongly to go in front during the second half and it needed some massive defence from the visitors to prevent them falling further behind.
Halley, who came on at full back, came under a real bombardment, with some huge bombs causing him problems.
“I got knocked out after taking the first one and the second I was nowhere near,” he admitted.
“I wasn’t too happy with my own performance. It wasn’t a great display and I was blowing a bit too but it was good to get the finish at the end.”
