Bulls star Sam Burgess today launched a fierce defence of under-fire Steve McNamara insisting: Blame us – we’re at fault.
Supporters vented their fury at the boss as he made his way down the Odsal terraces at half-time against Hull FC.
The abuse, also repeated at the end of Sunday’s defeat, came on the back of the club’s worst-ever start to Super League.
Bruised Bradford are still searching for their first win and McNamara is the new 7/4 favourite to be the season’s first top-flight boss to get the chop.
But England prop Burgess urged frustrated fans to lay off the coach, maintaining it is the under-performing squad which has failed to deliver.
“There’s a lot of stuff going wrong on the pitch but none of that’s down to Steve,” he admitted.
“He doesn’t come out and drop balls and miss tackles. We’re doing that.
“He coaches us to win games as a team and if we stuck to the gameplans he sent us out with we’d be fine.
“Unfortunately, we’ve not been on the ball yet and Steve’s the one catching all the flak.
“That’s not right. I’m willing to fight his corner as from the players’ point of view it’s our fault not his.”
Individual errors have cost Bradford dear so far and they head to Perpignan on Saturday night desperate to avoid a fourth straight loss.
The halcyon days of regular Grand Final glory seem an eternity ago but the competition has changed dramatically since their last title success in 2005.
Chairman Peter Hood and the board of directors have backed the coach while Burgess also maintains McNamara is the man to guide them out of the gloom.
“The players are without a doubt 100 per cent behind Steve,” he said.
“We know how good a coach he is. He’s the smartest bloke I’ve come across in rugby league and knows what he’s talking about.
“There’s also a lot of stuff Steve does that people just don’t see.
“He works very hard for this club, day in, day out throughout the week, but his hard work has not been shown yet because of our performances as players. We haven’t done it. He goes into a lot of detail which makes everything easier for us and we are so well prepared but we’re just not doing it on matchday. It’s up to us to change that.”
Burgess, 20, gave a brutal assessment of performances so far: “We’ve nothing to hide behind; we’re not good enough at the moment.
“We have not been on the money or up to the new level of Super League.
“We’ve shown signs but over 80 minutes we haven’t been good enough right now as players.”
Burgess insists they can turn things around and is relishing the chance to attack Catalans Dragons.
“Before every game I only ever feel we’re going to go out and win this match,” he said.
“I feel we can this weekend and we’re going over there with confidence in what we’re doing.
“We just need to relax and not force play. When you’re 12-0 down inside the first five minutes, there’s a lot of pressure on to push for things and that’s when mistakes happen.
“We have to avoid that again but we’re getting there.”
