David Solomona will be sidelined for up to two months with the knee injury he picked up in Paul Deacon's testimonial against Wigan on Sunday.
Hospital scans dispelled initial fears that the Bulls second-rower may have damaged his cruciate ligament, which would have meant a six-month lay-off.
But it still means the former Wakefield player will miss the start of the season after he sustained a medial ligament problem while making a tackle.
Bradford coach Steve McNamara said: "Whilst it is disappointing both for the club and David himself, we realise that it could have been a lot worse."
