DANNY Addy says the Bulls’ famous fightback against deadly rivals Leigh has encouraged hopes of winning automatic promotion this season.
Jimmy Lowes’ side conjured a stunning comeback against the Centurions last Sunday, hitting back from 32-6 down with five tries in 15 minutes to seal a dramatic point.
Addy booted the touchline conversion to improve Omari Caro’s last-gasp score and give Bradford a 32-32 draw.
Although they were well below par for the first hour, there was a spirit and a togetherness about the Bulls which saw them fight to the death and Addy believes that bodes well for the challenges ahead.
Addy said: “We were under the sticks often enough on Sunday to be able to talk to each other about things such as character.
“That character is one thing we try and thrive on – the pride within the team – so that we don’t let our heads drop.
“At one point, I will admit our heads did drop a bit, but we found a way to turn things around and get Leigh on the back foot.
“We’re only four games in but, with the spirit we showed on Sunday and the way we have recruited has given us a bit of a different buzz this year.
“We got so far last season and fell short at the final hurdle, but we know what we’re capable of and we showed that in those last 15 minutes against Leigh, so hopefully this year we can try and win automatic promotion.
“That will obviously be our target in the coming months because this is definitely a Super League team we have here, without a doubt.
“We showed that towards the end of last year and at times this year.
“No disrespect to anyone else, but this club deserves to be up there in Super League – playing the likes of Leeds and Wigan on a Friday night.”
Addy was mobbed by his team-mates and took the plaudits following his point-saving conversion against Leigh.
But he is honest enough to admit that Bradford were awful for much of the opening 60 minutes.
“We’re not hiding from the fact we didn’t play well on Sunday,” said the homegrown back-rower, who is again performing admirably at scrum half this season.
“We were alright in patches but on the whole we were average, so it was just good to get something from the game.
“I missed two conversions but I rushed them because I wanted to get back and get the game restarted.
“Maybe if I had taken a bit more time that kick at the end could have been to win it.
“But we’re quite happy to come out with something after how we started the game.”
Bradford play Leigh at least twice more this season with a Summer Bash encounter in May and a trip to the Leigh Sports Village in July and a likely clash in the Qualifiers.
Addy insisted: “We’re confident we can beat them.
“We were really confident before Sunday’s game and if we had done the things we spoke about doing in the week then we could have put a score on them.
“It’s good to have that confidence and we play them again at least twice this year. Now that we have had a bit of a kick up the backside, I’m sure the next two games will be different.”
Meanwhile, the Bulls’ Challenge Cup fourth-round trip to Dewsbury Rams will take place on Friday, March 18 with an 8pm kick-off.
