BULLS winger Omari Caro has been named in Jamaica's 20-man squad for next month's Firehouse Subs Rugby League World Cup Qualifiers in Florida.
Former London Broncos and Hull KR back Caro, who joined Bradford in July on a short-term contract and sufficiently impressed head coach Jimmy Lowes to earn a 12-month deal for the 2016 campaign, is joined in the party for the Americas Qualifiers by Keighley Cougars duo Hamish Barnes and Ross Peltier.
Thirteen of the party to face the United States and Canada come from Championship or League One clubs, including Hunslet Hawks pair Danny Thomas and Richie Barnett, who both have local connections.
Bradford-born Barnett scored 30 tries in 60 appearances for the Cougars, while Thomas, who has played rugby league for Bradford Dudley Hill and union for Bradford Salem, was with Gloucestershire All Golds in 2014 and Oxford in 2015 in League One.
Former Batley Bulldog and Bramley Buffalo Thomas, who was an amateur with Dewsbury Celtic, said: “I’m really proud to be in the squad and I will be linking up with a few lads from Keighley Cougars, who we’ve (Oxford) played against this year.
“I’ve represented the Reggae Boys before, and the rivalry between us, USA and Canada is big.”
Former Bradford junior Joel Farrell, now at Dewsbury, is also included in the squad, along with Batley pair Alex Brown and Wayne Reittie.
“We have a good mix of players who have been there before, as well as debutants who will add spark to the team,” said Jamaican director of rugby and head coach Romeo Monteith.
“We looked at each position and tried to get the best candidate based on form and commitment to the programme.”
Monteith added: “There are some good players who missed out, but I believe that speaks of the strong pool we have to choose from.
“Our UK-based players will add a degree of professionalism and know-how and compliment a strong core of domestic players who have proven themselves in the local leagues and in representative games.”
Jamaica face the United States in Jacksonville a week tomorrow (December 4) and must back up against Canada in Deland four days later, which could pit Thomas up against current Salem player Chad Bain, who has also played for Dudley Hill.
Canada face the United States in the final qualifier in Jacksonville on Saturday, December 12.
