Keighley-based referee Ashley Klein has been dropped for this weekend's Challenge Cup ties following his part in Gansongate'.

Klein was the video referee for the match, which ended with Jordan Tansey's controversial winner at the hooter.

Tansey was offside when he touched down after collecting Kevin Sinfield's penalty kick when it came off a post. Match referee Steve Ganson has admitted his blunder in allowing the try to stand and apologised to the club, players and fans.

But Klein, along with Ganson one of the RFL's six full-time whiste-blowers, has now entered the row after revealing he was involved in the award of the actual penalty.

Ganson - who is also axed this weekend - was ready to allow play to continue when Matt Cook regathered possession from the boot of Gareth Ellis until Klein told him via his microphone to award a penalty for offside.

Klein not only got the decision wrong but broke video referee policy as well.

An RFL spokesman said: "A video referee should only act on decisions referred to him by the actual main official."

Bulls chairman Peter Hood said: "We wanted this answered. Now we want to know why did he award that penalty and will Klein show the moral courage of Mr Ganson by apologising to the people of Bradford?"
