JAMES Mendeika has described his Bulls debut as an “unbelievable” experience and is now hungry for another slice of the action.
The recent signing from Featherstone replaced Ryan Shaw at full back early in the second half of the Summer Bash win over Halifax and enjoyed a fine game.
He was solid defensively and a searing break late on almost led to a try for Jay Pitts, although Shaw looks certain to keep his place against London Broncos on Sunday.
The Cumbrian was taken off with a broken nose after a collision with Tyler Dickinson but it will not keep him out this weekend.
Yet Mendeika said: “Even sat in the stands last week and listening to the fans was unbelievable, but to get out there and play was obviously even better.
“I obviously wasn’t wishing the high shot and broken nose on Shawy but when I got on I was loving every minute of it.
“Hopefully I will bring a little bit of everything to the squad and it was a shame I slipped as I passed to Pittsy last week.
“The offload went a little bit lower than I wanted it to but I’d like to think that showed the attacking side of my game.
“Also, at the back, hopefully I can shore us up defensively and then work really hard when I get the ball.”
Head coach Jimmy Lowes signed Mendeika to put pressure on existing members of his squad at full back and centre.
The former Warrington man is noted for his versatility and added: “It’s Jimmy’s call in terms of what position I play.
“He will do what he sees fit for the team every week and all I can do when I get the opportunity is put my best foot forward and try and get in the team.
“But I was certainly loving it last week against Halifax and it was a longer stint than I expected.
“It was nice to be able to get into it and get some decent carries under my belt.
“It was a tough second half and, other than a couple of knock-ons and penalties, it was pretty much set for set.
“Defensively our effort was unbelievable and the boys worked really hard.”
Mendeika is hoping to be involved against London, for whom he played in Super League during a loan spell from Warrington in 2013.
Lowes has a wealth of options at his disposal, but Mendeika added: “If I’m needed this weekend then of course I’ll put my hand up to play.
“I’m loving every second of my time at Bradford so far and just being involved in the Summer Bash last weekend reminded me why I’m playing.
“Playing in front of an atmosphere like that was unbelievable and my girlfriend and my mum and dad were there to support me. I’m looking forward to the rest of the season now.”
