JIMMY Lowes insists the Bulls want to go "as far as possible" in this season’s Challenge Cup as they hit the Wembley trail against Workington tomorrow.
The legendary former hooker won rugby league’s famous old knockout cup competition twice as a Bradford player, in 2000 and 2003, and is now aiming to emulate that success as a head coach.
Lowes’ men are overwhelming favourites to dispatch the Cumbrian part-timers and secure their place in Tuesday’s fifth-round draw, where they could face Super League opposition.
But the Bulls boss is refusing to take Phil Veivers’ team lightly and will give them all the respect they deserve.
Head coach Lowes said: “The Challenge Cup is a good competition and we’re really looking forward to Sunday’s game.
“Hopefully we can have a good go at getting past Workington and stay in the competition for as long as possible.
“We are taking it seriously, like we do with every game, but the randomness of the draws makes it hard to determine how far you can go.
“But we take every game as seriously as the last or next one, and we want to progress as far as we can in this competition.”
The draw for the fifth round will take place on the banks of the River Hull on Tuesday evening, when both Hull FC and Hull KR will be in the hat, along with Wakefield and Salford.
Beating Workington and being drawn against top-flight opposition would allow the Bulls to make a statement about their promotion credentials.
But Lowes is looking no further than this weekend’s clash with Workington, who the Bulls face at Odsal again in a Championship fixture seven days later.
Lowes said: “We’ve got Workington to get past before we worry about anything else.
“I’m not particularly bothered about how other teams perceive us – I’m not interested in that.
“I can’t control anything but the things we can influence are how we play, irrelevant of the opposition.
“Workington are a plucky team and they’ve got a good bloke in charge in Phil Veivers, who I know really well from his coaching days here at Bradford.
“He’ll be pumped up and he will have his players pumped up.
“Whitehaven were at Odsal a few weeks ago and they played the game tough.
“Workington are another Cumbrian team who play the game similarly tough.
“It’s going to be a battle and the fact we’re playing them twice in two weeks doesn’t really have any bearing on things.
“We’re focused solely on this week and it just so happens that we’re playing them in the league the following week.
“There might be changes to both sides next Sunday, but let’s just focus on this week first.”
The Bulls are set to be boosted by the return of Danny Addy for tomorrow’s match after his recovery from injury progressed quicker than anticipated.
The homegrown backrower hobbled off in the opening-day defeat at Leigh but has been included in the 19-man squad for this weekend’s game.
In another major boost to Lowes, centre Adrian Purtell and winger Etu Uaisele have recovered from hamstring strains and both men look set to feature.
But Dale Ferguson will again not be risked while Chris Ulugia and Nathan Conroy have also been given the weekend off.
Lowes said: “Everything is going in the right direction regarding our injuries.
“We’ve had a good few injuries, some long-term ones from pre-season, and a few more over the last few weeks, but everybody seems to be getting slightly closer.
“We’re battling through with what we’ve got and the boys did a really tough job for us at Batley last weekend.
“Once you’ve seen that, then you’re more confident about things when you do get a few injuries.”
