BULLS coach Jimmy Lowes will utilise his full squad and hand opportunities to a number of Under-19s prospects in Jamie Peacock’s testimonial against Leeds on Sunday.
Lowes was left disappointed after last weekend’s visit of Huddersfield fell victim to the weather but the former Rhinos hooker will “give everybody as much game time as possible” at Headingley.
Leeds are set to field a strong side with possibly only Brett Delaney (knee) and Mitch Achurch (eye) absent while Lowes is set to hand run-outs to members of the Under-19 squad.
The Bulls will be missing a number of players through injury. Epalahame Lauaki has yet to arrive at the club and it remains to be seen whether trialist Charlie Martin will feature, but Lowes is relishing Sunday’s derby after the Huddersfield call-off.
He said: “Last weekend’s postponement was disappointing because we put our plan in place to play three games in January as part of our build-up to the season.
“We cannot control the weather but knowing the fact that the Leeds game will be on due to them having undersoil heating, you have got to make the best of it and we will take a big squad to Headingley.
“I want to give everybody as much game time as possible – there will be a lot of changes and within that the guys will have the opportunity to showcase themselves.
“I’ve got a couple of young blokes from the Under-19s stepping up as a reward for the hard work they have put in, so it will be a healthy squad going there.”
Lowes paid tribute to former Bradford team-mate Peacock, who made his name at Odsal before defecting to arch-rivals Leeds in 2006.
Peacock is a prime example of what can be achieved in life through sheer determination and desire to succeed, according to Lowes.
“What a great servant to the game Jamie Peacock is,” said the Bradford boss.
“He asked me towards the end of the last year and I had no hesitation in agreeing to the fixture.
“It is a warm-up game for ourselves and a testimonial game for JP, so there will be a few fans there from Leeds and Bradford.
“It will be a good occasion but for us it is a warm-up game ahead of Leigh.”
Peacock overcame a lack of self-belief to make the grade at Odsal and prove his doubters wrong, winning every trophy on offer before repeating the trick at his hometown club.
Lowes added: “JP went on to flourish at Leeds, the responsibility helped him progress, he went on to play for England and Great Britain so we saw the great side of Jamie Peacock.
“He matured not only as a person but as a bloke and a leader at Leeds and I have some great memories of playing with him.
“He never gave in, he had great self-belief in his own ability, even when he went through a tough patch and went out to Australia.
“He backed himself alongside his family and that’s the biggest thing for me – his determination to make it in the game he loves. It goes to show that you should never give up.”
Sunday’s match is the Bulls’ second and final friendly and Lowes already has one eye on the opener at Leigh on February 15.
He said: “We are looking forward to Leigh because we will be in a decent place for that game and we hope to bed ourselves in gradually and tweak things along the way.
“Castleford was a first outing for us as a group of people, from then on I expect us to go on and perform to a certain standard starting with Leigh.
“We strive to improve and as long as we progress week in week out, then we should be in good stead by the end of it.
“The season will pan out the way it does over the course of the season, but we will go quietly about our work.”
