TRIALIST Charlie Martin could get the chance to stake a claim for a contract with the Bulls in Sunday’s pre-season friendly with Huddersfield.
The former Castleford Tigers man, who has been playing rugby union for Huddersfield, is spending two weeks on trial with Jimmy Lowes’ squad as he bids to earn a full-time deal.
Martin is hoping to feature against the Giants and a decision on the 22-year-old is expected to be made next week.
The centre or back-rower has taken a fortnight’s holiday from his job at the City & Guilds in Wakefield in order to pursue a return to full-time rugby.
Martin made six Super League appearances for Castleford in 2013 but was released in March 2014.
During his time at Wheldon Road, he had stints in the Championship at Cougars and Featherstone.
He also had a spell at Batley last season before switching codes and joining Huddersfield last autumn.
He quickly scooped the club’s monthly Player of the Year award for September after just four senior competitive appearances for the National League Two North outfit.
Wakefield-based Martin, who stands 6ft 1in and weighs 96kg, made his Super League debut at St Helens in Easter 2013.
He was with the Bulls squad for last weekend’s friendly at Castleford and now looks set for a run-out himself against the Giants.
Brett Ferres will miss Huddersfield’s opening friendly following his involvement in the Four Nations but former Bulls rookie Oliver Roberts should make his first appearance for Paul Anderson’s side.
Four more ex-Bulls – Joe Wardle, Craig Kopczak, Anthony Mullally and Jacob Fairbank – are also in line to feature along with new signing Craig Huby.
