Bulls star Elliot Kear is determined to cement his spot on the right wing again this coming season.
The 25-year-old enjoyed an outstanding 2013 campaign, playing every Super League game and scoring 11 tries.
His performances earned him a one-year contract extension which will keep him at Odsal until the end of 2015.
Although Kear has played primarily on the wing since joining from Crusaders two years ago, he has also filled in at full back for club and country.
Kear’s versatility gives Bulls coach Francis Cummins another option as Brett Kearney continues his recovery from a shoulder-related injury.
But Cardiff-born Kear said: “I’m definitely looking to keep my spot on the wing because I don’t want Franny to think I’m a full back and then to lose my starting position.
“I think he knows that I can play full back and if BK isn’t available one week then he can use me there.
“But I definitely want to nail down my position as a winger again.
“Like I said this time last year, I just want to stay consistent all season.
“Hopefully I can do that again and repeat what I did in 2013 or better myself.”
Kear played in all three of Wales’ World Cup matches – the opening two games against Italy and the USA on the right wing before lining up at full back against the Cook Islands.
Iestyn Harris’s side lost all three of their group-stage matches but Kear and former Bulls loanee Ben Evans produced some impressive displays.
Kear added: “As a team we definitely underachieved but the morale in camp was superb and to be part of the World Cup was a fantastic experience.
“Iestyn placed his faith in me by putting me at full back for the last World Cup game, which I was thankful for.”
Kear is looking forward to the Bulls’ upcoming friendlies against Hull FC, Dewsbury and Castleford.
“We’ve been training well and are looking forward to playing now,” he said.
“Our skills have been very good and I think we’re ahead of where we want to be fitness-wise, so I’m pretty excited.
“Every player is out to stake their claim for a first-team spot, so it’s going to be pretty competitive.”
