James Donaldson believes he is well placed to establish himself in Francis Cummins’ plans this coming season.
The highly-regarded Cumbrian back-rower made 18 Super League appearances during 2013 and went on to secure a new one-year deal.
The incentive-based contract will see him earn another year based on appearances and he is confident about the season that lies ahead.
“When you come back for pre-season you want to try and prove a point and show the coach you are worthy of a place at the start of the season,” said Donaldson.
“I haven’t been able to do that in the last few years but hopefully this year I can.
“I’m feeling in good condition, I feel fresh, and I just need to put in the hard work during pre-season.
“It should pay off when the season starts in February. I should be a whole lot better as a player.”
Donaldson is renowned for his tackling and defensive prowess but is aiming to add to the offensive side of the game.
“I’ll be working on that in pre-season,” he said. “Maybe I couldn’t use my feet as much as I wanted to last year but this year they are feeling a lot stronger and I can start using them more.
“Hopefully I can find a few things in my game to aid my attacking skills.”
Donaldson lives with Elliot Kear and paid tribute to the Wales winger after he recently signed a new deal.
“Elliot’s a great player and his effort for team is outstanding,” said Donaldson.
“He’ll do anything for the team and is a very fit player, so he never seems to get tired. Living with him, you see how he does all the right things to better himself as a professional.”
The Bulls, meanwhile, have confirmed they will be playing two pre-season friendlies before the new Super League campaign.
They travel to Dewsbury Rams on Sunday, January 19 before hosting Castleford Tigers a fortnight later (both 3pm).
Cas are also the opposition for the opening league game on February 16.
