The Bradford Bulls Foundation have announced the launch of wheelchair rugby league available to both primary and secondary schools across Bradford and the wider district.

The Foundation are the club’s registered charity and this will be the first wheelchair rugby league programme across the country with the intention of setting up a schools competition.

Spearheaded by Richard and Gill Johnson, the Bradford Bulls Wheelchair Club play an active role in the Bradford community.

They aim to deliver, fun, inclusive, awareness-raising and active workshops to over 2,000 adults, children and young people in primary and secondary schools, colleges, universities and corporate businesses.

The club are now ready to set a solid scheme in place and launch a competition to grow the game within schools.

The launch at Tong High School included a morning taster session for Ryecroft and Hill Top primary schools, followed by a session for Tong High School students.

Wheelchair RL can be delivered in schools and a half-day session will cost £150 or £300 for a full day.

The wheelchair team were nominated for a national diversity award in 2012 and made it to the final three.

Gareth Cook, general manager of the Bulls Foundation, said: “We are delighted to finally launch wheelchair rugby in primary and high schools.

“This is a wonderful, fully-inclusive game that raises the profile of disability sport and provides young people with new opportunities.

“We would also like to thank Tong High School, the Accelerate team in particular, for helping to arrange and support the day.”
