James Donaldson admits he faces an uncertain future but is keen to commit himself to the Bulls.

The highly-rated back-rower, 21, signed a one-year deal during the off-season which expires at the end of the current campaign.

However, he would like to extend his stay at a club he has played for since the age of 16.

Donaldson has shown fleeting glimpses of his best form this term but has not managed to secure a regular place in Francis Cummins’ side, often being sent to play for Dewsbury on dual registration.

Donaldson said: “I don’t know what I’m doing next year – it’s all up in the air.

“I just need to get some time on the field and hopefully my future will take care of itself.

“Would staying at the Bulls be my preferred option? Yes, definitely.

“I’ve been here for five or six years now. I joined when I was 16 and I’m 22 at the end of the year so it’s been a long time. There’s obviously no better place then here for me to play.”

Yet Donaldson admitted he has to keep his options open, saying: “If it’s not to be for me here then it’ll have to be somewhere else. It’s Franny’s choice.”

Cummins is in discussions with a number of players about contracts for next year, with Jamie Foster so far the only new deal to be announced.

Donaldson became the last of the club’s out-of-contract players to be handed a new deal in November, and he admitted at the time that the wait had been a stressful one.

But he said: “I can’t let it drag on too much because clubs are filling their squads up so there is only so long you can hold out for. Sometimes you have to go somewhere else and it’s not what you always want but there are times when you’ve got to do that.”

Donaldson says his agent, Craig Harrison, will work hard behind the scenes to get him the best possible deal for next season.

His overriding objective is to force his way into Cummins’ plans in the coming weeks and reproduce the kind of quality which saw him earn an England Knights call-up at the end of the 2011 campaign.

Donaldson said: “I just need to get some game-time under my belt and I want to be in the first team consistently every week.

“I can’t afford to be playing at Dewsbury one week and at Bradford the next. I’m still young but I need to be getting some good first-team game-time here.”
