City could do with an extra attacking boost to help fire them over the promotion line, John Hendrie claimed today.
The Valley Parade legend believes another striker in the ranks would galvanise spirits for the tense run-in to the season.
Today’s trip to Notts County kicks off a hectic run of seven games in three weeks – half their remaining fixtures.
As City enter a critical phrase, Hendrie reckons Stuart McCall’s squad have strong enough back-up for every position, except up front.
Hendrie has backed the efforts of Michael Boulding, Peter Thorne and Barry Conlon, who have all hit double figures. But they could benefit with some assistance.
Hendrie said: “The obvious choice where to bring someone in is up front. I said it before the window opened in January and my thoughts haven’t changed.
“They’ve got cover everywhere else. Obviously Omar Daley will be a big miss but with Steve Jones, Joe coming back and now Chris Brandon, you will have three players vying for the two wide positions.
“Stuart’s got an abundance of players in centre midfield, likewise at the back you’ve got Zesh Rehman in who can play anywhere along the line. And if anything happens to the goalkeeper, you can always bring in an emergency loan.
“I’ve been in dressing rooms when a new face comes in and it gives the place a lift. The goals have dried up and someone coming in, if they are the right type, would help not hinder.”
Chris O’Grady arrived for a month from Oldham but his stay was hindered by illness and he failed to have any impact, making only two sub appearances. Hendrie added: “Chris wasn’t quite up to the standard for whatever reason and it didn’t work out for him. So there is still a position to be filled.
“I’m not being critical of the strikers at all. They’ve put in good shifts and have got decent goal records this year.
“But what happens if any of those get suspended, injured or lose form? I think you need another body in there to help them at such an crucial time of the season.
“Striker is the toughest role to play. It’s easier to defend than attack. The hardest thing to do in a football match is score goals.
“It would be great if they could get someone in with the right character; whether it’s a young player who wants to use the loan spell as a learning process or someone who can’t get games at his own club and wants to put themselves in the shop window.
“It’s not easy because everyone’s crying out for a striker but if Stuart could find someone extra with that hunger and desire, it would be a big help.”
