City are running the rule over former Leeds winger Seb Carole.
The Frenchman is currently without a club after leaving Elland Road in the summer.
Stuart McCall is in the market for a right winger, with Joe Colbeck injured until the new year, and invited the 26-year-old in for training.
The City chief has a couple of other irons in the fire as a short-term fix but any deal has to be struck by the transfer deadline on Thursday tea-time. After that, clubs cannot bring anyone else in until January.
Carole spent two seasons with Leeds after signing from Brighton. But after featuring fairly regularly under Dennis Wise, he found chances hard to come by when Gary McAllister took charge ten months ago and did not start a game for the current Leeds boss.
He still lives in Leeds, which is why City offered him the opportunity to join them for training.
McCall said: “Seb’s fit and he’s been training with us. I’m going to have a chat with him to see what he thinks but maybe he could do a job for us in the short term.
“He’s been paid up by Leeds so maybe he might want to put himself in the shop window. We’ll have to see.
“There are one or two other things that might come up next week with the deadline coming up.
“I’ve made a few enquiries about players and had a couple of knockbacks. Sometimes it’s just down to timing and they might have been available a week ago but aren’t now.
“But things can change not just day by day but hour by hour sometimes. Teams can suddenly get somebody in and that means that another player becomes available.
“I spent the whole trip down to Shrewsbury the other day on the phone. You are just waiting for things to happen.”
McCall must also decide on loan pair Nicky Law and Tom Clarke, whose one-month stays are up after Tuesday’s game with Chesterfield.
Managerless Huddersfield are expected to ask for Clarke back but City are likely to get more joy with Sheffield United if they want to extend Law’s stay.
