While all the snow may be an unwelcome site for most Bradfordians, one local lad is making quite a name for himself on the slopes.
Jamie Nicholls is currently regarded as Britain’s best snowboarder after winning every British title available since he started competing when he was eight.
In fact, the 17-year old has 84 tournament victories to his name so far, and he says that such a large haul of trophies has only been possible because of hard work.
He said: “There is no secret to my success, it’s all about working hard to progress your sport wherever you’re riding.”
The youngster, who trained at Castleford Xscape, has also appeared in snowboarding films and plans to compete in some of the world’s best-known events, including the Winter X Games in Aspen, Colorado at the end of January.
Before that, though, he will be competing in Europe’s biggest event - The Burton European Open in Lax, Switzerland, which attracts over 450 of the world’s best riders.
At last year’s Burton, Nicholls finished 13th, but this time around, a top-ten finish could be on the cards.
Nicholls says he is still getting used to competing at the highest level of the sport, but that a snowboarding world champion from these shores is a possibility.
He said: “It’s amazing to be travelling the world, competing, meeting new people, filming and jibbing with friends. I guess someone from Britain could become snowboarding world champion. We’re taken more seriously now.”
