More than 130 children from 31 primary schools took part in the City of Bradford Under-11 Sportshall Athletics Trials at the Richard Dunn Sports Centre.

With only 15 boys and 15 girls going forward to represent the city on Saturday in the West Yorkshire Sportshall Eliminator at the same Odsal venue, qualifying was a tough proposition as the pupils ran, jumped and threw enthusiastically.

Helping part of Bradford Council's b active campaign to run smoothly were the sports centre staff plus an army of volunteers and organisers from Bingley Harriers.

Children all took part in ten different events, including sprinting, standing long jump, standing triple jump, throwing, agility challenges and the obstacle relay.

Organisers Alan and Christine Oates have already received one note from a teacher saying how much the children enjoyed it, and official starter, Bingley Harriers' coach Phil Manchester, added to the occasion by getting the children to cheer each other on when the races were taking place.

The behaviour of the youngsters was excellent, with the majority shaking hands and congratulating each other after some thrilling races.

The primary schools that took part were: Baildon Church of England, Wilsden, The Girls' Grammar School Bradford Preparatory, Myrtle Park, Oxenhope, Moorfield School, Sandal, Eldwick, St Walburga's, Bradford Moor, Crossflatts, Nessfield, Cottingley, Cullingworth, Harden, Hollingwood, St Joseph's RC, St Stephen's, Sacred Heart, Wycliffe, Newby, Thornton, Burley & Woodhead, St Anne's, St Barnabas, Long Lee, Pool, Richmond House, Oakworth, Hoyle Court and the One In A Million Organisation.

If Bradford are successful on Saturday, they will go forward to the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield on Sunday, March 30, for the Yorkshire Under-11s' Sportshall Fun in Athletics Festival.

The Bradford team was selected on all-round ability and agility. The fast children in the sprint, hurdle and obstacle races were first on the list but only after checking that their field event performances were good.

On Saturday the City of Bradford representatives will compete in many team relays, and even the field events are team events with scores being totalled for each competitor.

It is possible that some top scorers in the field events in the trials may have missed a place in the team if they were not in the top 15 in the track events.
