Bingley Swimming Club's Schools' Galas should have a special atmosphere this year at Shipley Pool.

The semi-finals on Saturday and Saturday week and the finals on Friday, February 1 (6.45) are the last that will be organised by Maureen Morley after 20 years in charge. She is handing over to new blood in the shape of Geoff Killock.

The galas began more than 30 years ago and were started by Channel Swim record-holder Barry Watson.

Originally held over one night, the galas have now evolved into a three-night affair, with the top six primary schools from each semi-final progressing to the final to share the limelight with the secondary schools.

Admission has to be restricted to ticket only due to their popularity.

Over the years more than 35 primary schools and nine secondary schools have taken part and more than 6,000 pupils have competed.

A total of 23 primary schools have entered this time. Eldwick, who, like Saltaire, have competed in all the last 20 galas, are defending their primary school title.

Steve Warner, head of Bradford Council's Sport and Leisure Services, said: "Having attended on several occasions, I am always impressed with how well Bingley Swimming Club organises this event.

"It's fantastic to see our youngsters taking part so enthusiastically in competitive sport and, most importantly, having a good time."
