A team from Keighley's Central Judo Club had an excellent journey home from the North East County Championships at Newcastle after notching the surprise of the day.

Jessica Copperwaite, who is only 14, won gold in her 16 years and under class, which wasn't the shock.

It was when the teenager, pictured, was allowed to take part in the senior open weight ladies' competition that heads began to turn.

Despite being the youngest competitor by up to 11 years, and also the smallest fighter in the group, Jessica, who last year was invited to train with the national squad, surprised everyone by taking the gold medal in the final after winning all three of her qualifying rounds.

Fellow club member Oliver Tucker, 17, took the silver medal in the under-71 kg senior class. Club senior coach Bill Root said he could not have been prouder of the team, as for some it was their debut in competition.

They meet at Our Lady of Victories School on Guardhouse Road on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7pm to 9pm). Anyone interested can ring Mr Root on (01535) 602690.
