Bradford won three categories in the ninth annual West Yorkshire Youth Games at Leeds Metropolitan University's Carnegie campus.

Competing against the county's four other local authorities, Bradford triumphed at boccia (a form of bowls), the under-13 netball and the gymnastics disability event.

They were also runners-up in the New Age Kurling and lifted the Fair Play Trophy in gymnastics (Year Three and Year Four), boys' rugby league and cricket.

Kirklees triumphed in the boys' rugby league, under-15 netball and Year Three and Year Four gymnastics, while Leeds came out on top in the girls' rugby league, Year Four tennis, Year Five tennis, under-14 table tennis and cricket.

Wakefield held sway in the New Age Kurling and Key Stage Three gymnastics, while Calderdale were victors in the Year Five and Year Six gymnastics and the under-12 table tennis.

More than 800 children were represented, and the inaugural opening ceremony was introduced by England netball player Tracy Neville - sister of England footballers Phil and Gary. Tracy was present courtesy of Sport England's Sporting Champions scheme.

The journey to the games began six months ago in schools across the region, with the event open to all children in West Yorkshire aged between six and 16.

Nigel Harrison, director of West Yorkshire Sport, said: "This year's event has proved popular and the introduction of an opening ceremony helped everyone get into the spirit."
