Baildon 23, York RI 13
After their 13-try demolition of Newton Aycliffe in the RFU Junior Vase last weekend, Baildon stuttered to their seventh consecutive SSE Yorkshire Division Three league win in front of the biggest crowd of the season at Jenny Lane yesterday.
Failure to control the ball at crucial times and ill-discipline, which put the penalty count at 21-6 in the visitors' favour, almost cost the Jenny Laners the game.
It was only made safe after open-side flanker Jonny Picken rounded off a workmanlike performance when he crossed on 77 minutes to put the game beyond reach of York RI, who were unlucky to go home empty-handed and could easily have inflicted a rare home defeat if they had converted three relatively easy penalty attempts in the second half.
First-half tries from centre Hayden Lister on 20 minutes and left winger Richard Kingham on 29 minutes, and another impressive display of kicking from centre Andy Patchett, who landed two difficult penalties at important times and successfully converted Kingham's try wide out on the left, kept the Jenny Laners' in front.
But their inability to close out the game and failure to once again score the elusive fourth bonus-point try left them disappointed at the final whistle and knowing that they will have to improve before next week's visit to leaders Roundhegians.
