Newton Aycliffe 6 Baildon 79

Baildon put on a superb display of attacking and expansive rugby to brush aside Durham outfit Newton Aycliffe in the first of their two group games in the RFU Junior Vase competition.

Despite playing into a strong wind in the first half, the Jenny Laners were soon on top with tries from vice-captain Craig Woodhall and ever-improving prop Adam Hewitt inside 15 minutes following several powerful surges from the visiting pack.

The home side managed to stay in contention with two well-struck penalties but Baildons’ dominance at the set-piece and breakdown coupled with a well organised back line – who handled superbly well in difficult conditions and attacked at every opportunity – soon had the floodgates open.

Further first-half tries from full back JJ O’Connell on 26 minutes, left winger Richard Kingham (29) teenage debutant right winger Matthew Robinson (34), blind-side flanker Tom Craven (37) and a second touchdown for Woodhall on the stroke of half-time and three successful conversions from centre Andy Patchett put the visitors 41-6 ahead and left the game effectively over as a contest by the interval.

The second half continued in the same vein and, although Newton Aycliffe tackled manfully, they could not stop a now rampant Baildon side, who racked up a further six tries through Robinson (41), hooker Dale Tabiner (50), JJ O’Connell (51), open-side flanker Jonny Picken (59), replacement flanker Alistair Beaumont (65) and Adam Hewitt, who completed the 13-try rout on 67 minutes.

Patchett improved four of the touchdowns to give himself a 14-point tally for the game.

Baildon play Northumberland side Seghill at Jenny Lane in the second of their two group games games on February 11.
