Kendal 5 Otley 11
In desperate need of a win, Otley delighted their many travelling supporters by completing a double over Kendal – a result that lifted them out of the bottom three and condemned their opponents to bottom spot in National League Two North.
Conditions – a strong cross-field wind and a sticky surface – were far from what Otley would have wished for but they were ideal for the home side, who subdued their visitors with some fine rucking and mauling, denying them any sight of the ball for the first 30 minutes.
However, Kendal soon discovered they were up against a side who refused to take a backward step and all they could manage was a single try scored by prop William Coxon on 16 minutes while Daniel Temm was in the sin-bin.
The No 7, once again prominent, had the misfortune to break a finger just before half-time, by which time the scores were level.
Temm started the move before handing on to full back Ben Collins, who in turn glided into the home 22 before hanging on for hooker Tom Mobbs to score.
And Otley went close again when winger James Twomey was tackled into the corner flag right on half-time.
Now having got the measure of the opposition, Otley began to gain the upper hand and four minutes after the break they went ahead when Collins kicked a penalty and Kendal began to lose their composure.
Yellow cards handed out to Coxon on 50 minutes and prop Glen Cheshire on 68 hampered them greatly and Collins added to their woes with a second penalty.
The last 30 minutes brought no further score but there was never any doubt about the result.
