Derby rivals Bradford Salem and Yarnbury, who met four weekends ago in a remarkable SSE Yorkshire Division Two clash at Brownberrie Lane, resume hostilities on Saturday at the same venue in the Centurion Yorkshire Shield.

The Horsforth club led 22-0 at half-time before conceding a stunning 52 unanswered points but Salem’s first-team manager Neil Klenk isn’t reading anything into that league clash.

He said: “Yarnbury imploded but we did play well in the second half and I am expecting a tight encounter.”

Salem are without hooker or flanker Dave Hutton and Matt Steel, who are both at weddings, while fellow centre Jonny Robinson is out with a hamstring injury.

Richard Langhorn is therefore recalled at full back, with Chris Savva moving to the wing, where he has traditionally operated, with Tony Williams moving from wing to outside centre.

Jonny Luxton, who yearns to return to the back row, has been selected at inside centre, with James Cunliffe returning in the back row.

Prop and skipper Simon Davies and lock or back-rower Damien Pearson aren’t handed starts but both are on the bench.

Klenk added: “As is usually the case when players see a blank weekend from league fixtures, they make other arrangements but we value the competition and I am sure that Yarnbury coach Bob Hood wants to put one over us.

“Both sides know that if they win they are into the quarter-finals.”

Salem won the Shield in 1960, 1962 and 2009 and were runners-up in 1974, 1991 and 2006.

Saturday's derby kicks off at 2pm – earlier than normal as an allowance has to be made in case extra time is needed.
