Baildon 12, Rotherham Phoenix 18 A low-scoring but entertaining game in which the lead changed hands five times saw Baildon fall at the final hurdle to lose for the third week in succession.
The Jenny Laners thought they had snatched victory from the jaws of defeat when stand-off Andy Patchett's fourth penalty bisected the posts on 78 minutes to put his side 12-11 in front but uncharacteristic slack defence from the restart let the visitors back in with a soft try to seal the game in the dying seconds.
Before that Patchett's early penalty had been cancelled out with a disputed try by the visitors when the referee decided that the Phoenix right winger had not put a foot in touch before touching down in the corner, despite the indications of the touch judge who had signalled for a line-out.
However, Patchett's fine kicking display kept the scoreboard ticking over for Baildon and when Phoenix had a man sin-binned on 49 minutes, his third penalty success edged his side in front to give Baildon a sniff of victory.
However, despite two brilliant solo runs from full-back JJ O'Connell, which were only halted by some desperate last-ditch tackling, and a storming display from young prop Adam Hewitt, Baildon were unable to cross the Phoenix line.
For the second week running they had to settle for a losing bonus point, which leaves them mid-table, the statistics of which amply illustrate the Jenny Laners' current problem as, despite having the second best defensive record, their failure to score tries gives them the fourth lowest points tally.
